What is mental well-being?
Mental well-being is a sense of calmness and the ability to cope with the normal stresses of life. We can train and develop our minds to achieve mental well-being, that will eventually lead to a joyful and fulfilling state of mind.
Why do we suffer?
The reason why we often suffer is because of our uncontrollable desires. Excessive greed is a mental defilement. A defiled mind is not conducive to happiness and well-being. Therefore, it is important that we keep our desires in check.
Training to be mindful and aware
Achieving mental well-being involves training ourselves to be mindful and aware. Mindfulness and awareness ground us to important things in life and keep us away from unhealthy habits and dangers.
Training to be contented, wholesome and calm
By keeping the mind contented, wholesome and calm, we free ourselves from negative mental states such as greed, hatred and delusion. It involves developing the inner causes of happiness and eradicating the causes of suffering.
Training to be simple, focused and wise
Training the mind to be simple, focused and wise enable us to see things as they really are, and develop the right perspectives about life. With more frequent practice, we come to know how to make better decisions, interact more effectively with others, and being more empathetic towards others.
